Safety

|
Smurfit-MBI has always believed that safety in the workplace is
important. The methods used were the standard safety programs and
activities practiced in the industry: ensuring that regulatory
requirements were met, that plant safety rules were established,
that joint safety committees were organized and that the workforce
was provided with training and safety information was also critical.
Results, as expected, were comparable with the industry average.
SAFETY MISSION STATEMENT:
“To be the best of the best in the industry as measured by the
Recordable Case Rate (RCR)”.
In 2001, Smurfit-MBI implemented a proven and superior safety
process from our parent company Smurfit – Stone Container
Corporation (SSCC), called S.A.F.E, Smurfit Accident Free
Environment. In order to coordinate the S.A.F.E. process, each plant
in the organization designated one or more SAFE Champions who were
trained as resource personnel and responsible for its implementation
and administration. Later that year, Smurfit-MBI hired a Safety
Manager to assist plant management and the SAFE Champion network in
its implementation. The results far exceeded the industry average in
Canada. This was further supplemented by the addition in 2005 of two
Area Safety Coordinators.
